Program Overview
Firewalls play a critical role in protecting network assets. This course explores the various types of firewall and their implementation. The course will examine how firewalls are used and review sample configurations. It will also cover firewall technology, capabilities, and administration. The course will address management oversight including policy review, report/dashboard data interpretation, vendor oversight, and audit report interpretation. The instructor will use demonstrations of a standard small business firewall to show capabilities and limitations of the appliance. The course will conclude with the application of the lessons learned to the banking environment.
Key Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the role of a firewall;
- Discuss four types of firewall;
- Explain how to perform a thorough review of firewall configuration;
- Identify potential impact of a misconfigured firewall; and,
- Discuss IT audit report findings to assess the security and availability risk to a financial institution’s information security program.

This course is open to appropriate staff of the FDIC and partner government regulatory agencies. This course is not open to the public or staff of private banks.
Prerequisites
Participant should have attended ITEC, Introduction to Security, and Introduction to Telecommunications and Networking.
