Community Banking Research Program

Reference Data

The FDIC Community Banking Study relies on a comprehensive database, which has been constructed based on quarterly financial reports submitted by federally-insured banks and savings associations. While the formats of these reports differ somewhat over time and across report types, the FDIC database employs standardized definitions that facilitate comparisons. Additionally, the database uses the FDIC's extensive data regarding structural changes in the banking industry since 1984, enabling a full accounting of bank entry, exit, and other events that have reshaped the industry over this period.
