SUBJECT: Stolen Bank Note Security Paper

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has asked the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to alert all FDIC-supervised banks to the theft of bank note security paper from the Denver County (Colorado) Vital Statistics Office. The paper was sent to a private disposal company for destruction on January 22, 2002; however, one of the pieces of security paper that was supposed to be destroyed was recently presented at a Social Security Office in the form of a birth certificate. It is not known how much of the paper was actually destroyed or how much may be in circulation. These are not the same documents reported in FIL-41-2002 , dated May 2, 2002.

The items stolen include:

  • Birth certificates (state short form 8" x 7") numbered as follows:
    1672918-1673500 1711501-1715500
    1685480-1685500 1757334-1757499
    1706591-1707500 1759501-1761500
    1708658-1709500
  • Death certificates (state long form 8 ½" x 11") numbered as follows:
    1535929-1536000 1550001-1550500
    1536719-1537000 1551001-1553500
    1549261-1549500 1555501-1556500
    1549802-1550000
  • A group of pocket-size documents (4" x 2 ¾") numbered as follows:
    28101-30000 33494-34000
