Hurricane Katrina Social Security Payments and Benefits for Veterans

Summary: Updated information about Social Security and Veterans Benefits Administration payments for those affected by Hurricane Katrina is available on the Internet. 

Highlights: 

The U.S. Treasury Department has asked the FDIC to distribute the following information to FDIC-supervised institutions:

  • On September 6, 2005, the U.S. Postal Service issued a press release with updated information on the distribution of mail containing Social Security and other checks addressed for delivery to storm-stricken areas. The press release may be found on the Internet at http://www.usps.com/communications/news/.
  • The Social Security Administration has posted information about the handling of Social Security checks for people affected by Hurricane Katrina at http://www.ssa.gov/emergency/ .
  • Information about Veterans Benefits Administration payments, VA home loan guaranty services and other matters for veterans affected by the hurricane is available on the Internet at http://www.vba.va.gov/ .
